Herbs for Healthy Digestion

In this fast-paced life, food indulgences are frequent. We might be able to follow 50 to 70 percent of the principles of healthy eating.   • A teaspoon of Ajwain/Bishop’s weed (Trachyspermum ammi) combined with two pinches of salt helps provide relief from flatulence.

  • Two teaspoons of ginger juice with one teaspoon of lemon juice and a pinch of salt and black pepper with or without water is beneficial for the stomach.
  • Aloe vera taken in the form of pulp or juice daily strengthens the functioning of the stomach and promotes its action.
  • Harad or Haritkari (Terminalia chebula) also known as the long life elixir can be used as a mild, safe and an effective laxative. The drug helps strengthen the stomach and promote its action. The juice of this fruit is especially beneficial in the treatment of acidity and heartburn. It neutralizes acidity in the stomach if taken after meals. The pulp of this fruit taken along with rock salt or a decoction of the fruit and cloves/cinnamon can help relieve constipation. The herb is also one of the ingredients of the famous ayurvedic preparation Triphala.
  • Alfalfa is one of the most nutritious herbs discovered till date. It is called the King of all plants and the father of all foods. It is one of the richest sources of dietary fiber and chlorophyll. It is outstanding alkalizing food and contains 130 to 142 mg of alkali-forming elements per 100 grams. It is said to augment the peristalsis or movement of bowels, improve digestion and serve as an excellent tonic. The seeds of alfalfa are known as the king of sprouts. This in the form of tea, provides vital alkalizing benefits for hyperacidity. Addition of mint to this decoction helps settle the disturbed stomach.

  • Eating cooked Dill leaves (Sowa) regularly aids digestion and prevents constipation. A drop of Dill oil, obtained by distillation of the seeds, mixed with a teaspoon of honey licked immediately after meals help the digestion process.
  • Fenugreek leaves and seeds are also beneficial in conditions of indigestion and flatulence. 2 teaspoons of its powder can be swallowed with milk or water. Two teaspoons of the seeds could be swallowed daily. Alternatively, they could be soaked in a cup of water overnight and the water taken in the morning.
  • Ayurvedic preparations like Herde powder, Triphala powder, Ajwain powder, Saunf powder and Sonamukhi powder can prove to be effective in cases of gas formation, indigestion and constipation. However, this must be taken under medical guidance.
