Acyclovir is prescribed against herpes simplex virus and varicella virus which include herpes zoster infections or shingles, chickenpox or varicella, and genital herpes. It is also used to treat herpes simplex labialis or cold sores. Acyclovir is used to relieve the pain and discomfort, and helps in speeding up the healing process of blisters or sores caused by the viral infections.
