Allopurinol is prescribed for treating gouty arthritis that occurs due to high uric acid levels in the blood, kidney stones caused by uric acid crystals, and high levels of uric acid occurring during cancer treatment. It is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor works by decreasing the production of excess uric acid levels in the body. Patients must drink a minimum 8 or 10 glasses of water every day while taking allopurinol to avoid the occurrence of kidney stones.
