Bell's palsy is a one-sided facial paralysis that occurs due to unknown causes. The nerve that controls the facial muscles is typically swollen, inflamed, or compressed, which results in facial paralysis. It was first described by a Scottish anatomist Charles Bell, hence the name. It develops suddenly and usually affects one side of the face.
