Sinus Node Dysfunction (SND)

What is Sick Sinus Syndrome ?  

A group of abnormal heart rhythms which could be caused by a malfunction of sinus node, the heart’s primary pacemaker.


Cause(s) :  
  • Medications such as calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers and anti-arrhythmics
  • Disorders such as sarcoidosis, hemochromatosis that cause scarring, degeneration or damage to the conduction system in the heart
  • Cardiac surgery that has affected the cardiac conduction system
Symptoms :  A person with Sick sinus syndrome may be asymptomatic. An acute attack may include the following symptoms.
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Fainting due to ventricular fibrillation
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • ECG
  • Holter monitor
  • Event recorder
  • Implantable loop recorder
  • Electrophysiologic tests
