Acute radiation syndrome occurs when a person is exposed to a high dose of external penetrating radiation within a short time period. Usually more than 1 Gy.
Cause(s) :
High Radiation Exposure
Symptoms : Symptoms appear within hours or weeks depending on the dose of the radiation.
Radiation exposure: 12 hours post-exposure:
Vomiting
24 hours post-exposure:
Prostration (extreme exhaustion)
Fever
Diarrhea
Later
Petechial hemorrhage
Hypotension
Tachycardia
Profuse bloody diarrhea, maybe death.
Diagnosis and Tests : Immediate medical care should be given for the person who is exposed to radiation attack/accident.
