What is Carcinoid Syndrome ?  

Carcinoid Syndrome is a set of symptoms like flushing, diarrhea that are associated with Carcinoid tumors. Heart failure and bronchoconstriction also occur in rare cases. Bronchial spasm Edema, ascites.


Cause(s) :  
  • Carcinoid tumors produce serotonin and kallikrein, which cause the symptoms.
Symptoms :  
  • Diarrhea
  • Cyanotic flushing - Bright red flushing of face and neck
  • Telangiectasias - Skin lesions on face
  • Bronchial spasm and wheezing
  • Edema
  • Ascites
  • Abdominal pain
  • Heart problems like fibrosis of tricuspid and pulmonary valves
  • Sudden fall in blood pressure
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • 24-hour urine levels of 5-HIAA
  • Blood test
  • Echocardiogram
  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Radionuclide scan Or Octreotide radiolabelled scan
