Storyline : The Black Balloon is a story about Thomas.16 year old Thomas. who is autistic and has attention deficient disorder. Thomas hates his brother Charlie who is so unpredictable, unmanageable and disgusting, but wishes he didn't. Thomas's father Simon and mother Maggi are expecting their next child. Maggi has complications in her pregnancy and is bed-ridden. So Thomas and Simon look after Charlie and Charlie behaves real nasty at times by shit-smearing, his shopping centre tantrums, and riding in the Autistic School bus. Thomas feels he has had enough of Charlie. Thomas takes swimming lessons from Jackie and develops a crush for her, only to realize that Charlie is also entranced by her. Thomas's birthday dinner proves to be a nightmare when Thomas pours out all his pent up emotions about Charlie which proves to be heart warming and confronting.
