Storyline : Astrid Magnussen, a 15-year-old girl, lives in California with her mother Ingrid, a beautiful, free-spirited poet. They lead an unusual but satisfying life, until one day a man named Barry Kolker, whom Ingrid refers to as the Goat Man enters their life and Ingrid falls madly in love with him. But her heart is soon broken and she uses her favorite but poisonous flower, the White Oleander to murder him. Ingrid goes to prison and Astrid goes through a decade of forbidden love, religion, near-death experiences, drugs, starvation and feels forbidden to love shifting from one foster home to another. However she manages to keep in touch with her mother by letters to the prison. Ingrid feels desperate to give Astrid the power to survive while Astrid feels she needs to teach her mother about love
