Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), is a progressive disease that makes it hard to breathe. Both chronic bronchitis and emphysema are considered to be COPD. COPD is a leading cause of disability, and it is the fourth leading cause of death in the USA. Currently, 329 million of people are living with COPD.

COPD symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness and cough that produce large amounts of mucus. COPD includes respiratory tract disorders which cause obstruction to airflow these are emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and small airway disease.

80% of COPD cases are caused by cigarette smoking. COPD often occurs in people with 40 years of age or older who have a history of smoking. COPD resulting from inhaling pollutants, second-hand smoke, occupational exposure. Genetics may also play a role in developing COPD, even if the person has never been smoked or has ever been exposed to any lung irritants such as dust, fumes or particular chemical in the workplace.

COPD people are diagnosed using tests called pulmonary function test, chest x-ray tests, CT scan, and measurement of alpha-1 antitrypsin levels. Attacks of COPD may occur more frequently as the disease progresses. Patients are strongly advised to quit smoking. COPD can be treated with medications and surgery (lung transplantation)
