Lactulose: Drug Used to Treat Constipation and as a Stool Softener for Piles or Hemorrhoids

Lactulose is used to treat chronic constipation, piles as a stool softener, liver failure affecting the brain or hepatic encephalopathy, opioid-induced constipation, and hyperammonemia. In case of severe diarrhea, the use of lactulose should be stopped. Occasional blood tests are required if lactulose is taken for a long time. Oral rehydration salts can be used for dehydration during aggressive therapy.
