Medical College of Wisconsin at Madison has been granted a whopping $8.1 million to develop a tool kit that would identify agents of bio terrorism like the H5N1 virus. This was announced by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

It has been said that the Avian influenza or the H5N1 virus has the potential to become a pandemic. There is also a constant threat from the terrorists all over that there could be a biological warfare in future. This has prompted the federal government to allocate huge sums towards research on combating such threats.

The medical college would be involved in devising a tool that would be small, automated and quick in detecting such agents of bio-terrorism. Dr. Kelly Henrickson will be responsible for this mission. He is a professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology at the medical college and is well versed in developing such devises which would identify causative microbes for chicken pox, SARS, influenza, Pneumonia etc. His tool kits have been widely used by physicians all round the world.
