While women are highly likelier to lie about their appearance, men bluff about their jobs in online dating sites, a new survey has found.

Looks and jobs are among the top 10 details lied about in online dating profiles, the report said.

The survey of 1,000 single adults, commissioned by online dating community BeautifulPeople.com, revealed that women lie about the size of their bust, pretend to work in entertainment and also claim to be friendly with celebrities to make themselves seem more attractive.

Men fare worse than women when it comes to lying - many men lie about their age, height and weight.

More than 40 per cent admit to making out they earn more than they really do to make their jobs sound more interesting - while 33 per cent of women do the same.

In the journey of love, dating is the first and most significant step taken by prospective mates.

Pretending to know celebrities, claiming to work in the film industry and making out they have a PA are also among men's top ten lies.

"The online dating industry is a minefield of people misrepresenting themselves," the Telegraph quoted Greg Hodge, managing director of BeautifulPeople.com, a dating community exclusively for good-looking people, as saying.

First Impression
A survey has found that first impressions have a profound influence on determining the future course of a relationship.

The findings also say that while people themselves lie on their profiles they are still likely to believe the details others post about themselves.

There was also a difference between countries, with over 53 per cent of Americans admitting to lying about their appearance compared to just 44 per cent of Britons.

Internet 'Dating' for Money
Thanks to a US website that openly offers companionship for money, but balks at the word prostitution, pretty young women and older men of means are pairing up.

"American society is more obsessed with appearance and stature than the British so it makes sense that they would embellish the truth," said Mr Hodge.
