24-hour Drinking Culture Responsible for Increase in Incidence of Cancers

The 24-hour drinking culture in Britain has led to an increase in the incidence of various cancers; more specifically oral cancer and that of the esophagus.

Parliamentary questions by the Liberal Democrats have brought out figures that show a 50 per cent rise in oral cancer diagnosis since 1997 and a 20 percent rise in the diagnosis of the cancer of the esophagus during the same time.

"Excessive drinking has been on the rise for years, and these shocking figures show how dramatically the health problems of booze Britain are escalating. Ministers cannot turn a blind eye to the terrible problems alcohol is causing," Don Foster, the Liberal Democrat spokesman told The Daily Mail. "The Government's failure to cut alcohol consumption now is storing up problems for later. The appalling rise of alcohol-related health problems will only continue unless we crack down on reckless retailers and irresponsible drink offers."

In the figures for oral cancer and those of the esophageal cancer, drinking was to lame. Experts have warned that unless this culture is curbed, the number of cancers will continue to rise.
