Almost 16 percent of the population in the United States (46.6 million people) have no health insurance.
A report released by U.S. Census Bureau shows that California is the fifth worst in the nation in terms of the percentage of residents without health insurance.
Texas was the worst with an uninsured rate of 24.6 percent, while 18.8 percent of California’s population was uninsured. Minnesota had the best record with only 8.7 percent of the population being uninsured.New Mexico was noted to have an uninsured rate of 21.1 percent while Florida and Oklahoma had an uninsured rate of 19.6 percent and 19.5 percent respectively. All these five states were found to be above the national average of 15.9 percent.
According to the report, titled "Income, Poverty and Health Insurance in the United States: 2005" almost 16 percent of the population in the United States (46.6 million people) have no health insurance.
The number of uninsured people has gone up by 1.3 million when compared to the previous year and 8.3 million children were uninsured compared to 7.9 million previously. The employer-sponsored insurance has dropped from 59.8 percent to 59.5 percent nationwide.
