A new study has come out with a startling revelation that nearly 60 pc of primary and middle school students in Shanghai are nearsighted. According to the survey conducted by the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010, 86 pc of the senior high students were shortsighted.
Furthermore, 70 pc of the junior high school and 38 pc of elementary schools children were found to be suffering from the disease, reports chinadaily.com.
The study has attributed the high incidence of myopia among teenagers to excessive schoolwork and frequent contact with electronic screens.
The survey also revealed that middle school students in Shanghai spend 2.8 hours a day using electronic products with screens and four hours on weekends.
This is much longer than the suggested two hours by the American Academy of Paediatrics.
