American hip hop star Missy Elliot explained her long absence from the scene by confirming that she is suffering from Graves’ disease. The 39-year old’s last album was Respect M.E released back in 2005 and the singer said that the reason for the long gap was due to the fact that she was suffering from Graves’ disease. Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disease in which the thyroid gland produces excessive amount of the thyroid hormone.
High level of thyroid hormone can cause a number of serious problems including rapid heart rate, fatigue, weight loss despite an increase in appetite and insomnia. Missy Elliot said that she was unable to write any songs due to the condition and said that she almost crashed her car once.
“I couldn't write because my nervous system was so bad - I couldn't even use a pen. I couldn't keep the brake down and almost crashed”, she said. The 39-year old added that she now feels fine though the condition will remain throughout her life and said that she was looking forward to the release of her next album, Block Party that is expected to be released this year.
