A Cup of Coffee Before Breakfast may Spike Blood Sugar Levels

Terry Graham of the University of Guelph in Canada has said that people who drink a cup of coffee before breakfast face the risk of elevating their blood sugar levels.

Researcher Terry Graham of the University of Guelph in Canada has said that people who drink a cup of coffee before breakfast face the risk of elevating their blood sugar levels.

Along with graduate students Lesley Moisey and Stia Kacker, he conducted a small study where healthy male volunteers were asked to consume caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee one hour before eating breakfast.

At breakfast two types of cereal were used - one with low-levels of sugar and one with moderate levels - to test the blood sugar levels after the meal was consumed. People who drank caffeinated coffer and had a low-sugar cereal had a 250 percent jump in their blood sugar levels as compared to when they drank decaffeinated coffee.

"Caffeine interferes with our body's response to insulin," Graham said. "It makes us resistant to insulin which in turn makes our blood-sugar levels go higher."

The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
