About 30 million men in the United States suffer from erectile dysfunction. This causes a decrease in quality of life for men. With exercise and weight loss , obese men with erectile dysfunction may be able to improve their sexual function say researchers.
Researchers, conducted a study to determine if lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and an increase in physical activity, would improve obese men’s erectile function. The study was conducted from October 2000 to October 2003 and included 110 obese men from ages 35 to 55 without diabetes, hypertension or hyperlipidemia. All had erectile dysfunction.Fifty-five men were randomly assigned to an intervention group. The group received detailed advice about how to achieve a loss of 10 percent or more in total body weight by reducing caloric intake and increasing levels of physical activity. The remaining 55 men were placed in a control group and were given general information about healthy food choices and exercise.
After two years, researchers found that men in the intervention group lost significantly more weight and increased their levels of activity more than men in the control group. The International Index of Erectile Function scores also improved in the intervention group, but remained stable in the control group.
Researchers conclude saying that lifestyle changes, including a reduced calorie diet and increased exercise, improve erectile function in obese men and resulted in about one-third of men with erectile dysfunction regaining sexual function after treatment.
