A new system named REACH: Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals, has shifted the burden or responsibility of handling safe chemicals to the manufacturers.
Chemical companies would be bound by law to make use of only safe chemicals for the safety of their business. This law aims to make chemicals used in all products - from cars to clothes, safe for users and the environs.
The European Parliament, along with EU governments, has approved this legislation on the use of toxic chemicals.. The legislation is a result of years of negotiations taking place among firms and environmentalists fighting for a decreased use of hazardous pollutants.
The new rules will be implemented by EU nations before 2018.
'This deal is an early Christmas present for the chemicals industry, rewarding it for its intense and underhand lobbying campaign,' said Green MEP Caroline Lucas.
Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said, this would 'increase our knowledge about chemicals, enhance safety, and spur innovation, while encouraging substitution of highly dangerous chemicals by safer ones'.
