The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases has appointed Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan as the brand ambassador.
The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (Global Network) has appointed Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan as the brand ambassador for its END7 campaign in the country. The campaign is attempting raise awareness of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) with India accounting for nearly 35 percent of total global burden of NTDs. More than 500 million are affected by five of the most common NTDs and the government has already launched NTD control and elimination programs in an attempt to eliminate the diseases by 2020.
Global Network hopes that roping Abhishek will not only help them educate people about NTDs and the importance of complying with free NTD treatment programs but also encourage national and state level policymakers to continue making the cost-effective investment in NTD programs.
“India represents 35 percent of the total global burden for NTDs, causing massive suffering among our poorest citizens. As a parent, I am deeply moved by the devastating toll of NTDs on children, and I want to ensure that no Indian child has to suffer needlessly. I am proud to serve as the END7 campaign’s ambassador in India and hope that others will join me in ridding our country of these preventable diseases”, Abhishek said.
