Why should aesthetic surgeries be tax free asks the British government? There is a proposal by the government to put VAT at 20 per cent on aesthetic surgeries, which includes tummy tucks, facelifts and boob jobs. This proposed VAT may result in increase in the cost of the average breast enlargement surgery by £1,000.
As per the proposal, cosmetic surgeons will need to register for VAT and pass the charge to the patients. Patients who are able to prove that the treatment was a medical necessity will be exempt from the tax.
Doctors are not too happy with this proposal.
Charging VAT on cosmetic surgery may help raise up to £500million a year, which can be used by the NHS.
