After Quarter of a Century Brit Town Crier is Deafened by His Own Bell

A British town crier has gone deaf by the sound of his own bell 25 years after hollering news in the streets.

Some 25 years after he took to shouting out news on streets, a British town crier has gone deaf by the sound of his own bell.

Keith Jackman, 86, revealed that the loud volume of his own bell has ruined his hearing power.

"Twenty five years of ringing the bell in my right hand has had an effect on my hearing, I guess it's an occupational hazard," The Telegraph quoted Jackson, as saying.

Jackson revealed that his hearing power in the right ear began depreciating 10 years ago, as he used to ring the bell in his right hand.

"My hearing started to deteriorate in my right ear about 10 years ago because I ring the bell in my right hand," he said.

"It was very gradual so at first I did not notice anything different but then I started to struggle to pick up people's words and the television always sounded muffled," he added.

Jackson, who retired from the job three years ago in Christchurch, Dorset, was forced to join his job again after his successor expired.

Jackson was more than content to get two hearing aids fitted in order to ease hearing and continue his job as a town crier.

"I did not realize that I was missing out on many things, like the sound of birdsong," he said.
