Agartala Medical College under Fire from MCI

Medical Council of India (MCI) has condemned the poor infrastructure, lack lustre teaching staff and even more students of the Agartala Medical College.

Medical Council of India (MCI) has condemned the poor infrastructure, lack lustre teaching staff and even more students of the Agartala Medical College.

The (MCI) delegation, headed by Dr Lalita Mehra, expressed disappointment over the deplorable condition of this government-run college and its failure to set up proper infrastructure over the past one year.

The non-completion of the college building was another factor of contention and a summons for the contractor was sent.

It was revealed that the contractor had failed to give an assurance for the completion of the building within the next six months as was demanded by the delegation.

The medical council delegation also found the laboratory and operation theatre in poor shape.

“Why don’t you go and visit the operation theatre built by the private Global Educational Net (GEN) in your town,” Dr Mehra reportedly told the college authorities.

The college faculty was also not spared and the delegation recommended demotion for some of the professors.

The inability of the second year students to answer some fo the most fundamental questions on theory only added fuel to the fire. When the students were asked why they were unable to answer even such basic questions, they reported that the topics had not been covered in the previous year.

The state government worried over the reaction of the delegation plan to send senior officials of the health department to Delhi to persuade the MCI against derecognizing the college.
