Over the years kidney transplantation has come a long way. The number of successfully transplanted kidneys has been able to help more and more people lead a normal lifestyle. However, a recent study looking into the issue, “If Age matters when matching donor and recipient kidneys,” gave not only the researchers a whole new perspective but also the transplant community.
Researchers from the University of Florida in Gainesville found that, pairing young kidneys with young recipients could actually potentially extend a young patient's life by more than two years.According to this new study, researchers examined more than 74,000 deceased-donor kidney transplants between 1990 and 2002. They found that if donors between the ages of 15 and 50 were matched with recipients under the age of 60, and if kidneys of donors 50 years and older were matched with patients over age 60 then the life expectancy of each transplant patient’s life would increase by an average of nine months, with the transplanted kidney lasting an additional three years.
