It will be a happy time indeed for doctors on New Year’s Day at AIIMS (All-India Institute of Medical Sciences) after the central government revealed that it will be hiking the salaries of the faculty members along with many other institutes.
Effective from January 1 the pay check of faculty members at AIIMS, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research Podicherry, Northeastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Shillong, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Chandigarh and three other institutes will be hiked to be on par with professors at leading IIT and IIM institutes. The centre revealed that this measure is being taken as a part of sixth pay commission benefits as per UGC scale. Doctors at AIIMS will be heaving a sigh of relief after seeing their demand for a hike rejected on a number of occasions.
Many doctors have instead left to either join private hospitals or start practice of their own instead of working with institute.
