The Centre on Wednesday ruled out granting complete autonomy to country's premier medical institution All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Responding to Leader of Opposition, Arun Jaitley's observation that ministerial control over AIIMS, in Rajya Sabha, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the government took the decision on the ground that if Director of goes berserk the situation would be difficult to retrieve.Azad said that his ministry would respect and maintain the present status of autonomy of AIIMS, which restrict the Union Health Minster from interfering in day-to0day functioning of the Institute, even after being President of the Institute.
If a Minister goes wrong he/she would be held responsible by the Parliament, but it would not be easy to dislodge an inconvenient Director as he/she is responsible neither to public not to parliament, Azad told the House.
The tussle between AIIMS Director Dr. Venugopal and the Then Union Health Minster A. Ramadoss remained in the centre stage of most part of the UPA government's previous tenure.
