Alcohol Intoxication Triggers Violent Behaviour

A study conducted in seeden shows that around 58% of the males who are under the influence of alcohol act violently.

A new study at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden reveals shocking results that all the people who had consumed alcohol behaved violently. This study had infact supported the already confirmed notion that alcohol incites violent behaviour.

The study included 133 violent offenders out of which 78 people (56%) were intoxicated with alcohol within 24 hours prior to the violent act. Usually the offenders were men who are suffering from psychiatric problems and the victims were already known to them.

Researchers found that that a 13.2-fold increase of risk of violence was found within 24 hours of alcohol consumption. Use of drugs like benzodiazepines and antidepressants in regular doses was associated with a decreased risk of violence, the study said, adding that the risk for criminal violence was not increased if alcohol was combined with benzodiazepines.

"Alcohol seems to have the largest triggering effect on violence compared to other substances we investigated. This suggests that treatment for individuals at risk for violence should be focused on decreasing their alcohol consumption", said Ulrika Haggård-Grann of the Karolinska Institutet.
