The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) is hosting the 56th General Assembly of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA).

Medical students from 70 different countries will travel to Perth on March 7 for the commencement of the biannual conference. AMSA is honoured to be hosting such a premier event, held last year in Santiago, Chile.

Representing two million medical students from 98 member countries, the 500 international delegates will join 40 Australian students to discuss pertinent international health issues, with a particular emphasis being placed on rural and remote health.

“AMSA is honoured to be hosting an event of this calibre. The IFMSA does fantastic work on a global scale, and we are proud to be so involved in the process of advancing health in the developing world,” says AMSA President, Rob Mitchell.

“This is a unique opportunity for Australia’s medical students, and for the Australian public, to learn more about the current issues in international health and medical education.

“There is much to learn, and much to be done. Australia is in a unique position this week, both to showcase our high standards of medical education and to significantly contribute towards the advancement of international health and aid work.”

Speakers will include the Federal Minister for Health, the Hon. Tony Abbott, and AMA President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal.
