The California Alliance for Inclusive Communities (CAIC) has recently joined the fight against assisted suicide and Assembly Bill 374. They join the majority of state and national disability rights organizations already opposing assisted suicide. CAIC is an advocacy group that works on behalf of groups with developmental and other disabilities and their families.
Just as a new national AP/Ipsis poll was released indicating that Americans are split on this controversial issue and Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Vermont overwhelmingly rejected assisted suicide, opposition in California grows.Californians Against Assisted Suicide and other opponents have successfully defeated previous legislative attempts to legalize physician assisted suicide. Assembly Bill 374 is the latest attempt by assisted suicide advocates to legalize the practice in California.
This bill is currently in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and opposed by the California Medical Association, California Disability Alliance, the California League of United Latin American Citizens, California Hospice and Palliative Care Association and dozens of other organizations representing disability rights, low income workers, and the uninsured.
