Anti- Asbestos Campaigners Express Concern Over Situation in York
The number of deaths due to mesothelioma continues to rise in York with anti-asbestos campaigners claiming that the time bomb is ticking away another year approaches.
Though the use of asbestos has been suspended, the campaigners claim that its legacy is still visible today with a large number of people suffering from mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer that is caused due exposure to asbestos dust.

According to York Asbestos Support Group, the number of deaths due to mesothelioma was 153 in 1968 but has risen to nearly 2250 deaths in 2008. Kim Daniells, who is the founder and chairman of the support group, said that her group is committed to supporting those who suffer from the problem.

“Sadly, there is often a lack of clear medical evidence about the cause of health problems and family members may have little information about the deceased’s work history. The bereaved who may be elderly and in frail health themselves can be faced with a coroner’s inquest to try to establish the cause of death”, she added.
