 Antibiotics Make Us Fat
Though antibiotics kill bacteria they can also bring about permanent changes in the gut environment which could make us fat. Changes in gut bacteria can also be a risk factor for allergies, asthma and diabetes.
This has been revealed by Dr. Martin Blaster of New York University Langone Medical Center while he was studying the effect of antibiotics on Helicobacter pylori bacterium. Though this bacteria lives silently in the gut, it can lead to ulcers in some cases. Antibiotics that are used to treat H. pylori infection trick the body into eating more by disrupting hunger hormone levels.

This research suggests that the scientific community must create a more narrow spectrum of antibiotics to kill specific organisms and not all bacteria. This could also help guide treatments for various diseases like obesity.
