Former Israeli premier Ariel Sharon was removed from the intensive care unit of a hospital here Tuesday after an improvement in the functioning of his kidneys and lungs, Israel Radio reported.

Sharon, who suffered a massive brain haemorrhage in January, however, remains in a deep coma. He was taken back to the Tel Ha'Shomer Hospital's department of respiratory rehabilitation, the radio said.

The relative improvement comes after a sudden deterioration in Sharon's condition earlier this month.

The 78-year-old was treated with a broad spectrum of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory steroids for pneumonia in both lungs and a decline in his kidney functioning.
