Arrested Drug Offenders Offered Faster Help

Drug addicts in Aberdeen's police lockups are to be offered immediate access to services to enable them to kick their habit.

Drug addicts in Aberdeen's police lockups are to be offered immediate access to services to enable them to kick their habit.

This scheme is already underway in many areas of Scotland like Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Tayside, Dumfries and Galloway, Lanarkshire and Edinburgh.

Funding has been provided to continue this scheme until 2008 and also to start a new service in Aberdeen.

Under this scheme the users are assessed after their arrest, and drug rehabilitation agencies contacted in order to provide the addicts with help to kick the habit. The scheme is also designed to reduce repeated offences by addicts.

The good work begins in police cells or in courts where drug rehabilitation workers provide the necessary information regarding the services, and assess the suitability of the candidate for treatment. Attempts are then carried out to secure a good treatment place.

An independent assessment revealed that 84% of those involved would recommend the scheme to others.
