ART for AIDS Reaching Many, Yet Scope to Ensure All Patients Receive Treatment –U.N Report

The recent report from United Nations portraying overall statistics of patients receiving treatment for AIDS worldwide is positive. ART for AIDS has certainly reached many, though there is a certain population of sufferers who are left out.

As per the recent figures, it is estimated that about two million people in the world undergo treatment for AIDS. Only 11% of pregnant women sufferers received the treatment. Upon comparison with the figures of last year, there has been a remarkable improvement of 700,000 who have received the anti-retroviral therapy.

Yet we are still a million less than the target set by WHO for the year 2005. Only 28% of the 7.1 million AIDS sufferers in the world are receiving treatment for AIDS.

Studies have demonstrated the success rate of AIDS treatment, about 93% in the year following the commencement of therapy. The report has appealed to the governments to do all they can to ensure antiretroviral therapy is provided to the deprived.
