The 43-year-old woman, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty in Wollongong District Court to altering her 16-year-old daughter's birth certificate and obtaining financial gain from child prostitution.

Prostitution has broadened its base to include street prostitution, massage brothels, gigolo outcall services, strip clubs, lap dancing, phone sex, child prostitution and sex tourism.

The court heard the daughter worked at Liaisons Escort Agency in Sydney's eastern suburbs under the pseudonym 'Layla'.

She earned up to $4,000 per week.

A large portion of the money she earned at the Edgecliff facility was then given to her mother, who knew it had been earned while working as a prostitute.

During her time at the agency, the teen was subjected to violence and mental abuse.

The victim impact statement said she felt betrayed by her mother and had a history of repeated self-harm.

She told the court she was forced to participate in illegal drug use and found the work degrading.

Sentencing the woman, aged 43, to a minimum jail term of 18 months, Judge Paul Conlon told the District Court her crimes involved “an extreme breach of trust”.

“Children have the right to the love, care and protection of their parents, (who) have an overriding responsibility to keep their children from harm’s way and to shield them from evil,” Judge Conlon said.

“The offender was well aware of (her daughter’s) history of self-harm, having regularly cut her writs and legs with razor blades in the two years leading up to the offences. “Consequently, her daughter was obviously in a fragile and emotional and psychological state and therefore was deserving of special care and attention from her mother.”

The mother, who also has a history of abuse and depression, received a discount on her sentence for her guilty plea and will be eligible for parole after 18 months, in April 2012.
