A 4-year old autistic girl in Britain has a rare addiction that makes her eat up carpets and fabrics and her mother fears that it could one day claim her life. Charlotte Cook was diagnosed with autism and also suffers from pica, a disorder which makes people eat non-nutritive substances. Charlotte’s addiction is fabrics and the four year old often chews up sofas and carpets to satisfy her cravings.
With doctors unable to treat her addiction, Charlotte’s mother, Nikki, is worried that one day a fabric might get clogged up somewhere and kill her daughter.
Stating that she and her husband, Alasdair, are alone in the fight, Nikki said, “Alasdair and I work hard, but there is no help out there. We can't afford to replace the sofas or the carpet because there's no assistance for working parents. We want to make people aware of the condition because it is rarely publicized. Some people make me feel as if Charlotte is a freak but she is my daughter and I would do anything for her.”
