Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad announced a new scheme through which the health ministry will bear the costs of treatment for pregnant women in the country. Speaking to reporters in Jammu and Kashmir, Azad revealed that the government will be paying the costs for treatment, transportation and food for the final six months of the pregnancy before the delivery and will also provide medical care to newborn babies for up to one year.
Azad added that the government has offered a number of incentives to pregnant women under two schemes, Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karikram (JSSK).
“Now onward every pregnant woman right from the day first of her conceiving the baby and till the delivery, the Government will bear all expenses on her treatment, including transportation from her home to hospital and back besides medication. In case of caesarians, the women will be entitled to get free treatment up to 45 days”, he said.
