Babies are getting bigger in New South Wales, Australia. That is certainly no good news but a matter of concern, stress experts.
Babies are getting bigger in New South Wales, Australia. That is certainly no good news but a matter of concern, stress experts.
The study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, examined the birth weight of 1 million babies born in the state over a 16-year period. It found there was a significant increase in babies weighing four kilograms or more at birth, with one in six boys and one in 10 girls falling into that category.
Researcher from Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital, Doctor Ruth Hadfield, says while the increase in birth weights is largely unexplained, it could be linked to a rise in gestational diabetes among mothers.
Studies have shown that it occurs in 4% of all pregnancies
and is considered as one of the most common metabolic disorders affecting pregnant women.
Dr.Hadfield says that in such cases, there can be possible implications for the infant's health, including the risk of developing asthma, type one diabetes and some cancers.
