US scientists have developed a new plastic pill which has been found to fight plaque and gum disease.
This tiny pill has been found to relieve pain and swelling just by its position between the threatened tooth and the diseased gum.According to researchers at State University of New Jersey, who have tested the pill on animals, the plastic also works as a barrier which enables the damaged gum and bone to heal as well as regenerate.
Gum disease also known as gingivitis, causes swelling and soreness of the gum tissue. Aggravation of the infection causes periodontal disease when the infection becomes severe and spreads to the supporting bones surrounding the teeth as well as the gums.
The build up of plaque is usually the cause of all gum disease. Periodontal disease causes loss of more teeth than through tooth decay.
Lead researcher Mark Reynolds at the 232nd national meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco said, "Human clinical trials of the pill may be two or more years away, depending on regulatory approvals."
Salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin is present in the pill for the swelling and discomfort as well as three antimicrobials to fight the infection.

He added, "Smoking is also a major cause of gum disease as it increases the amount of plaque produced and starves the gums of oxygen - so if you smoke, give up."
