Beer Fridge Will Not Be Turned Off for the Sake of Global Warming: Aussies

by Hannah Punitha on Jun 28 2008 6:43 PM

At this time of year you want to be outside having a barbecue and a beer so no turning of beer fridge say Aussies.

The beer fridge could soon become passé in Australia, thanks to a recommendation by New Territory (NT) Government, which is asking residents to "retire'' their beer fridges in a bid to tackle climate change.

Putting forth a list of "practical actions for NT households,'' the Government urges residents "retire the second fridge or freezer''.

According to a Power and Water Corporation brochure, Territorians can save up to 200 dollars a year by getting rid of their beer fridge.

However, for Chief Minister Paul Henderson, it is a case of "do as I say, not as I do'."

"I've got a beer fridge -- as many Territorians do -- and I'm keeping it,'' the Northern Territory News quoted him, as saying.

"So one of the ways I am going to do my part to tackle climate change is look at its energy efficiency rating to see if it can be improved," he added.

Same goes for resident Jake McCauley, 24, who said the extra money was well and truly worth it.

"It's a small price to pay to be able to have a cold beer in the dry season,'' he said.

"Of all the places in Australia, the Territory is probably known more than any other for its outdoor lifestyle.

"Obviously it's a luxury item but at this time of year you want to be outside having a barbecue and a beer. We won't be turning off our beer fridge," he added.
