A new study has found that being too thin also poses some serious problems if plan to conceive a baby.
While the main focus during pregnancy has always been on making sure that you are not overweight, a new study has found that being too thin also poses some serious problems if you plan to conceive a baby. Researchers in Chicago’s Advanced Fertility Center analyzed more than 2,500 IVF cycles and found that people who are too thin have lower odds of having a baby compared to those who are overweight.
According to the study, women who are of healthy weight have a one in two chance of having a baby and being overweight reduced the chances by a small margin. However those who were thinner than the recommended weight had one in three chance of having a baby.
Lead researcher Richard Sherbahn admitted that he was surprised by the finding as he believed being too thin would pose no problems in IVF treatments. “There has been the suggestion from other observations that being too thin is not good for fertility. But that shouldn’t impact on IVF because we’re giving them hormones, we’re making them ovulate and we’re getting eggs from them. I was kind of surprised, I didn’t expect these findings”, he said.
