If it's an extended release or coated formulation, splitting it may reduce its effectiveness or may even be hazardous.Next look at the pill shape and design. Some are already scored for easy splitting and should present you with no problem. But other pills are difficult to split and for these you need the right tool - a dedicated pill splitter, in fact, available from the drugstore. Don't use a regular knife for these. And, again, check with the pharmacist that the active ingredient is evenly distributed throughout the pill - otherwise you might be wasting your time.
