It is yet another scorching day across Australia, possibly shooting past 43C in Sydney. But music fans are not to be deterred. They are gathering in their thousands for the annual Big Day Out. And out are drugs too in a big way. The lethal combination of drugs and heat is proving a major headache to the city authorities.
A 27-year-old man is in a critical condition from a suspected drug overdose at the festival venue. The man was taken by paramedics to Westmead Hospital at about 2pm today, a spokeswoman for the Ambulance Service of New South Wales said.
Ambulance services treated up to 250 people for dehydration and alcohol intoxication.
The Ambulance Service says crews are preparing for a large number of patients again today.
Police are warning of the potentially lethal combination of heat and drugs and took into custody more than 30 people for drug possession yesterday at the Big Day Out .
Police are urging festival-goers to limit their alcohol consumption and drink plenty of water and say those who bring drugs to today's second day will be arrested. There were 48 arrests yesterday.
