The primary reason for infant death in the United States is due to birth defects, a study has found.

Researchers at the University of Arkansas analyzed the medical records of babies under 10 days old, which revealed that birth defects in the heart, such as, pulmonary valve stenosis, happen to be important reasons for hospitalization.

The study, enabled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, analyzed 35 birth defects from the 2003 medical records. The finding revealed that nearly 3 to 4 % of babies in the United States are born with some sort of birth defect, of which the most common were - hypospadias, cleft lip, Down’s syndrome and pulmonary valve stenosis.

Hospital care for the birth defect- Hypoplastic left heart syndrome was found to be the most expensive. This is a condition, where the baby is born with small or no left chambers of the heart.

Some birth defects are possible to detect through an ultrasound. Yet, families tending to babies born with birth defects need to be aware of the kind of medical treatment the baby needs, as well as the cost of treatment.
