Blood Sugar Kept In Control By Novel Protein

Scientists claim that a new protein identified can help in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes.

Scientists claim that a new protein identified can help in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. The protein has already shown promising results by extending lifespan in yeast, worms and flies and is known to keep blood sugar under control in mice.

Experiments have demonstrated that mice with an excess of the protein Sirt1 in cells of the pancreas have improved glucose tolerance and enhanced insulin secretion in response to glucose. In addition respond better to high sugar levels by raising insulin levels thereby enabling rapid clearance of the same.

Glucose is the principal circulating sugar in the blood and the major energy source of the body. If these results are carefully studied then probably we would be able to extrapolate the findings to patients with diabetes to improve the insulin response.
