Brain Plays Important Role In Diabetes Cure

The brain plays a significant role in controlling blood sugar, according to a new research study. Strategies are being formulated which will be aimed at the molecules in the brain which respond to insulin, which may ultimately lead to a better treatment of the condition. The brain has a significant role to play in this, according to the University of Washington’s researcher Michael Schwartz.

The experiments were conducted on rats, where it was found that side effects like putting on weight due to insulin treatment could be prevented. During the course of the research, a chemical which serves to limit the enzyme’s function which is involved in insulin response was infused into the brains of rats which were diabetic, before the hormone was injected.

A 35% fall in the chances for reducing blood sugar was seen in the case of the hormone therapy, without the normal response of the brain to insulin. It was also found that there was a two-fold increase in the response of the animals to the therapy as a result of gene therapy interventions.
