Brazilian Docs Convicted of Killing Patients for Harvesting Organs

A Brazilian court has convicted three doctors from a private clinic in the country of killing four patients in order to harvest the organs to be used in transplantation.

Rui Sacramento, Pedro Torrecillas and Mariano Fiore Jnr were convicted of killing four patients more than 25 years ago and were sentenced to 17 years and six months each in prison. Another doctor who had been implicated in the case had died last year.

Sacramento and Torrecillas were charged with murder while Fiore was charged as an accomplice as he had incorrectly declared the patients as brain dead in order to initiate the organ harvesting process.

Stating that the diagnosis was wrong, Sao Paulo state prosecutor Marcio Friggi de Carvalho said, “They simply did not have the diagnosis of brain death. They opened people up, took out their kidneys, and sent them on.”
