Breast-Fed Boys Have Higher IQ

Boys who are breast fed in their infancy are more likely to have a better grasp of mathematics, writing and spelling, a new research published in the journal, Pediatrics reveals. The research was conducted by the University of Western Australia’s Telethon Institute for Child Health Research who analyzed more than a 1,000 boys and girls of 10 years of age. A number of factors were included in the study including the level of the mother’s education, social class and amount of time spent reading to the child.

While girls did outshine the boys, those boys who were breast fed during their first six months managed to get at least 9 percent higher marks compared to those who had been bottle fed while the improvement among girls was very marginal.

“By looking at boys and girls independently, we found that predominant breastfeeding for six months or longer was significantly associated with increased mathematics, reading, writing, and spelling scores for boys, but no effect of breastfeeding was apparent on the educational attainment of girls for any subject”, the researchers wrote.
