 Britain’s First Cochlear Implant Performed
In what could prove to be a boon for thousands of Britons suffering from hearing problems, a group of doctors in Southampton successfully conducted Britain’s first cochlear implant which could help people who are deaf to hear in both their ears.
Up till know the majority of adults in the country were able to hear from just one ear after undergoing an ear implant surgery. However doctors at the Southampton General Hospital conducted a four hour operation through which the 44-year-old deaf woman from the Isle of Wight could now hear for the first time in her life.

Dr Mike Pringle, of the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth who headed the operation, revealed that it is the first implant of its kind to have taken place in UK. “This is different to other types of implant as it is one implant going into both ears. It’s not unusual for children to have two implants, one in each ear, but adults usually just have one”, he added.
